Budapest Children's Railway/Gyermekvasút
I’m in Budapest for a few days (leaving today) and had a chance to take a ride on the Budapest Children’s Railway.
You can see my video on YouTube.
This 11km line was devoloped by the Hungarian People’s Republic in 1948 as part of a trend all accross the Soviet Sphere wherin children’s railways were developed to teach and train children interested in railway professions. Most positions (except conductor) are operated by elementary school aged children and the line in Budapest runs through the Buda hills for about 11km. It runs from all stops about 1/hour and for 1800 Forints return (about $4 Canadian) you can ride the whole line. Apparently they specifically chose the Buda Hills due to the development of a number of children’s camps and Young Pioneers (communist scouts) locations in the area.
